I've been a Math/Science teacher for ten years. In the last three, I've had the challenging privilege of teaching Illustrative Mathematics to middle schoolers. In addition, I've experimented with structures from Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics.
A rewarding part of my job was using these tools to change the way my students (and I) thought about learning (and teaching) math. But what I really enjoyed was working with parents, to counsel and collaborate with them around what's changing, why it's changing, and how we can support their kids. There are many things that I'm excited about, some that concern me, and a lot that I'm still curious about exploring as an educator and as a parent.
This blog is designed for anyone who is interested/concerned about this issue. We'll take the perspectives from teachers, students, parents, curriculum designers, and even those people who make the standardized tests that everybody hates.
There's so much potential here, and too big of an opportunity to miss if we're not aligned with all the things we want for our kids.
So let's talk about The "New" Math, shall we?
